Black hole explodes at the centre of the Milky Way

Image
Long time ago a supermassive black hole exploded at the centre of our galaxy. The Hubble observatory has found evidence of a cataclysmic flare that punched its way out of our galaxy about 3.5 million years ago. Australian scientists used the space telescope to detect the imprint of the ancient explosion in a trail of gas some 200,000 light-years from the heart of the Milky Way. The black hole at the centre of the Milky Way exploded shooting expanding beams of energy into deep space like a nuclear lighthouse, New research has discovered that the event, known as a Seyfert flare, created two cones of ionising radiation which sliced through the galaxy and even impacted cosmic bodies outside of it. The flare was so powerful that it hit the Magellanic Stream, a trail of gas extending between the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, nearby dwarf galaxies. That black hole , known as Saggitarius A, is more than four million times as massive as our sun. Using data gathered by the Hub...

Life on Mars and names from Earth

Image
What if there is life on Mars? How would the public react? Would we, the earthlings, able to handle such an extraterrestrial concept? NASA chief scientist Jim Green doesn’t think so. “It will be revolutionary,” Green told the Telegraph. “It will start a whole new line of thinking. I don’t think we’re prepared for the results. We’re not.” The agency’s  Mars 2020 rover , set to launch next summer, will be the first to collect samples of Martian material to send back to Earth. But if scientists discover biosignatures of life in Mars’ crust, the findings could majorly rock astrobiology, said Green, the director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA. “What happens next is a whole new set of scientific questions,” he said. “Is that life like us? How are we related?” The Mars 2020 rover, along with the European Space Agency’s ExoMars rover, will drill into the Martian crust. The surface of the Red Planet is believed to be radioactive, so if ther...

Suicide bomber kills 24 at Afghan election rally

A campaign rally by President Ashraf Ghani in northern Afghanistan turned into nightmare on Tuesday, when a suicide bomber on motorcycle killed at least 24 people and wounded 31. Ghani was present at the venue but was unharmed, according to his campaign chief. Just hours later, an explosion struck near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul but details on that blast were not immediately known. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. The violence comes as Afghanistan faces p residential elections on Sept. 28 . The Taliban have warned that polling stations and election campaigns would be targeted. In Tuesday’s suicide attack, the bomber rammed his motorcycle packed with explosives into the entrance of the venue where Ghani was campaigning on the outskirts of the city of Charakar in northern Parwan province. There were many women and children among the casualties, said Dr. Qasim Sangin, a local official. Wahida Shahkar, spokeswoman for Parwan’s governor, said th...

Japan to dump radioactive water into the ocean?

Image
Apparently, Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power will dump radioactive water from its destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean as it runs out of room to store it, the environment minister said on Tuesday. Tokyo Electric , or Tepco, has collected more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water from the cooling pipes used to keep fuel cores from melting since the plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. “The only option will be to drain it into the sea and dilute it,” the minister, Yoshiaki Harada, told a news briefing in Tokyo. “The whole of the government will discuss this, but I would like to offer my simple opinion.” The government is awaiting a report from an expert panel before making a final decision on how to dispose of the radioactive water. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, in a separate press briefing, described Harada’s comments as “his personal opinion”. Tepco was not in a position to decide what to do but would ...

Eat Healthy, Eat Pizza

Image
Not only pizza is tasty. It is healthy too! So, what are you waiting for? Go, eat, repeat. Ms Chelsey Amer, a dietitian based in New York, claims that pizza is actually a more balanced breakfast than a bowl of cereal. Speaking to ABC News , she said: “Surprisingly, pizza can be a more balanced breakfast option than many sugar-filled breakfast cereals. “A slice of plain cheese pizza contains a balance of carbs, protein, and fat. “A bowl of sugary cereal with low fat milk is largely sugar and extremely carb-heavy.” Before you take this to mean that you should grab a slice of pizza before work every morning, Ms Amer explained that’s probably not wise. She added that she is ‘not recommending pizza as an everyday breakfast’, but is urging people to ‘focus on a balance of high fibre carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fast to stay full throughout the morning.’ If you’re puzzled by which breakfast cereal to go for, the NHS advises looking out for cereals containing wholegrain....
